Dogs are set to be banned from running off-lead in 20 nature reserves in the City of Wanneroo despite community efforts to have some parks exempt.

The city is moving to formalise the new on-leash rules, more than 18 months after a notice of motion first called for an investigation into dog exercise provisions to protect local wildlife.

The ban on letting dogs run off-lead would apply to 20 nature reserves where cats are already prohibited.

Among the reserves to be affected by the ban are Scenic Drive Park, Lake Gnangara, Koondoola Open Space & Reserve, Donnelly Park, Rotary Park, and the Lake Joondalup foreshore.

The city was set to implement the changes earlier this year after an officers’ report recommended it, but the council voted to defer a decision for more community consultation
