Calgary police have arrested three 15-year-old boys in connection with the homicide of 16-year-old Carter Spivak-Villeneuve. His body was discovered in the Abbeydale neighborhood on August 1 after authorities received a call about a person in medical distress around 1:20 a.m. An autopsy later confirmed that Spivak-Villeneuve's death was a homicide.
Investigators initially sought home security footage and requested that anyone with information about discussions on social media regarding the case come forward. Police now believe that Spivak-Villeneuve was acquainted with the three suspects and that there was a plan for them to meet that night. They allege that his death stemmed from an ongoing dispute.
The first suspect was apprehended on November 4 on the Muskowekwan First Nation in Saskatchewan and faces a charge of first-degree murder. The second suspect was arrested in Calgary on November 12 and is also charged with first-degree murder. A third 15-year-old has been taken into custody, with charges against him still pending.
Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service's homicide unit expressed concern over the ages of those involved. "The ages of those involved in this case are deeply troubling," he stated. Due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the suspects cannot be named.
Gregson added, "The loss of Carter is a devastating reminder of how seemingly insignificant conflict between youth can escalate with irreversible consequences. Carter’s death was senseless and the lives of everyone involved have now been forever changed."
