Primary Care Alberta (PCA) has declared an outbreak of an active, infectious tuberculosis (TB) strain in Edmonton’s inner-city.

The call was made in October after lab testing confirmed that two people who reside in Edmonton’s inner-city were infected with the same tuberculosis strain, which suggests recent transmission.

So far in 2025, there have been 12 cases of TB with connections to Edmonton’s inner-city and houseless people, which notes a significant increase over previous years. Only three of these twelve cases are linked to the same strain and are considered part of the outbreak.

TB is a preventable and curable infectious disease which primarily affects the lungs but can spread to impact other parts of the body. It usually spreads through the air via coughing, sneezing or spitting
