State Police are investigating a fatal hit and run in LaPlace that left a 59-year-old man dead Friday morning.

State Police said in a news release that Darius Crump, of LaPlace, was hit by a vehicle around 6 a.m. on Airline Highway near Hemlock Drive.

The preliminary investigation shows that Crump was walking southbound on Airline in the center turn lane when he was struck by a black Ford F-250 pickup truck traveling north. Airline Highway is two lanes in each direction, with a center turning lane.

The Ford remained near the scene briefly before the driver took off, heading north, State Police said.

Crump died at the scene.

State Police said the pickup had a Louisiana license plate, Z549227. They said the truck will likely have damage to the front driver's side headlight area.
