Eighty years after the end of the Second World War, annual services of Remembrance were held in communities throughout Western Elgin.

On Sunday, Nov. 9, ceremonies were held at the Keystone Complex in Shedden and at the Rodney Library, where commemorative plaques remain permanent display.

On Tuesday, Nov. 11, services were held at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, paying homage to the time and date of the end of First World War.

In the autumn of 1918, Germany was losing the war and asked for an armistice, or an end to the fighting. At 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 1918, this armistice began, although the war would not officially end until the signing of the Treaty of Versailles on June 28, 1919.
