Alberta Premier Danielle Smith is optimistic her government will reach a deal by month’s end with Prime Minister Mark Carney over a potential pipeline project and changes to environmental laws, despite appearing set to miss Sunday’s initial deadline for such an agreement.

Both Smith and Carney had referenced Sunday’s Grey Cup game as a target to announce a memorandum of understanding on future energy development.

On Thursday , Carney unveiled the latest list of major projects his government is seeking to fast-track which did not include any Alberta-based projects, though he said he is encouraged by discussions with Smith’s government and expects more progress in the coming weeks.

On Friday, Smith told reporters she is hopeful a deal would be announced in the next few days.
