A hearing in a brutal Cumberland County Prison murder case was abruptly postponed Friday after the defendant, Dangelo Nowlin, claimed he’d been “set up” on fake charges.

“The guy is still in Block ‘B,” Nowlin, dressed in a suicide prevention gown, said as his preliminary hearing began on charges he beat cellmate Erick Gainer to death shortly after being assigned the cell.

“He’s not even dead. You all set me up,” Nowlin said in court.

Cumberland County officials said Gainer did in fact die Oct. 23 at Penn State Holy Spirit Hospital, where he was taken for treatment after the Oct. 22 attack.

Gainer’s death was the first in-custody homicide at the Cumberland jail since the current prison opened in 1985.
