WAKULLA COUNTY, Fla. (WCTV) - The Wakulla County Sheriff’s Office is warning of a SIM card swapping scam, per a social media post .

A SIM card is the small chip inside your phone that lets people make calls, texts and use their phone number. In a SIM swap scam, criminals convince your mobile carrier to switch a person’s phone number onto a SIM card they have.

Once that happens, they can control someone’s phone number and use it to get into accounts that send verification codes by text. They can then try to gain access to your bank or social media.
