LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Department of Justice is looking to allow former Louisville Metro Police Officer Brett Hankison to be released from prison.

Hankison was sentenced to 33 months in prison for violating the civil rights of Breonna Taylor, who was shot and killed by Louisville officers on March 13, 2020, who were executing a search warrant on her home.

The DOJ has filed a motion arguing Hankison should be released on bail while he appeals his conviction because the agency said he is not a flight risk or a danger to the community.

The DOJ also said denying bail would not be appropriate because of “exceptional reasons,” arguing that it took three different trials to get a single guilty verdict.
