A new national "Hospital Safety Grade" report from the nonprofit watchdog organization The Leapfrog Group ranks Connecticut among the top states in the country for hospital patient safety — but also highlights areas where improvement is urgently needed.

Connecticut is fourth in the nation for the number of A-rated hospitals, a list that includes Hartford Hospital, UConn John Dempsey Hospital and a dozen others, according to the latest findings.

"This is an easy metric to look at, its a report card. It's an A, B or C, we see a wide variation," Quinnipiac University School of Medicine Professor Angela Mattie said.
