Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. admitted to using a powerful psychedelic known for inducing near-death-like experiences, according to explosive new claims in an upcoming memoir by journalist Olivia Nuzzi, the New York Post reported.
Nuzzi – a former New York Magazine reporter whose career unraveled after her sexting affair with Kennedy became public – details the allegations in her new book “American Canto,” due out Dec. 2. According to the Post’s reporting, Nuzzi writes that during their relationship, the 71-year-old Kennedy told her he continued to use psychedelics despite decades of sobriety.
That included dimethyltryptamine, or DMT, the potent hallucinogen found in ayahuasca and used ceremonially by Indigenous communities for centuries.
“It is known to produce intense visual and auditory hallucinations, according to the Alcohol and Drug Foundation,” the Post said. “Studies have shown that the drug’s powerful effects are often compared to having a near-death experience.”
Kennedy, now serving as President Donald Trump’s Secretary of Health and Human Services, has publicly promoted psychedelics as a possible treatment for trauma and depression. In congressional testimony in July, he said the drugs could have “tremendous” therapeutic benefits if administered in clinical settings, telling lawmakers, “These are people who badly need some kind of therapy, nothing else is working for them,” the Post reported.
According to the outlet’s Friday report, Nuzzi’s memoir also claims the MAGA cabinet secretary professed his love for her, called her “Livvy,” wrote her poems, and told her he wanted to have his baby – all while he was still a presidential candidate in late 2023.
Kennedy’s wife, actress Cheryl Hines, has continued to stand by him.
