It is not every day a school gets put into lockdown because of an aggressive camel next door.

But that is just one of the charms of Macdonald Valley Public School in Greater Sydney, where the animal has caused mayhem on multiple occasions, including "eating" the side mirror of a teacher's car.

With only 13 students and four part-time teachers, the Central Macdonald school is celebrating 180 years since its doors opened.

According to the Department of Education, it is the oldest continuously operating government school in the state.

Sarah Allen has been the principal for almost five years and cannot imagine ever leaving.

"When I first came here, it was like I had died and gone to heaven," she said.
