TUCSON, Ariz. (13 News) - Recent state data shows fewer than four in 10 Arizona students read proficiently, but one local elementary school is boosting student scores by focusing on parents.

Multiple studies from the National Education Association show that parent engagement helps kids get higher grades and behave better in class.

Arizona Report Card data shows Laguna Elementary has the district’s lowest reading scores, with less than 30 percent of students reading at grade level. Principal Alan Schmidt knew change was needed.

“Literacy starts at home with the families...and the more in tune and connected we are with our families, the more success we’ll have with our kids,” he said.
