Fontana will purchase a Foothill Boulevard motel for $7.5 million, giving the city its third property aimed at assisting those without permanent shelter .
The city will take over the Fontana Motor Lodge and renovate it into permanent housing for the homeless , according to a staff report.
The total cost for the project, including acquisition and renovations, is estimated at $11.4 million. At an Oct. 28 meeting, the Fontana City Council approved purchasing the 2.3-acre property, which includes the 58-room hotel.
Funds for the project will come from the general fund, according to Deputy City Manager Phillip Burum.
Once the city closes escrow, Burum said, officials can proceed with plans to update the motor lodge, including adding kitchenettes to the units to make them more like stud
