LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking a federal judge's release of former Louisville Metro Police Detective Brett Hankison from prison while he appeals his 33-month sentence, according to court documents.
Hankison began serving his 33-month sentence at a federal prison in New Jersey on Oct. 9.

The filing, submitted under federal law 18 U.S.C. 3145(c), argues that Hankison is not a flight risk and poses no danger to the community if released. It also states that his appeal raises substantial legal questions that could result in a reversal, a new trial, or a reduced sentence.
