PHOENIX — A teen was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car in north Phoenix, officials with the city's police department said.

Officers responded to reports of the crash just before 5 p.m. near Cactus Road and 19th Avenue and found the teen in life-threatening condition. The driver initially stayed on scene but fled as officers were arriving, officials with the Phoenix Police Department said. The driver ran for a short time before being caught by officers, officials said.

The driver is "being evaluated at a nearby hospital and being processed for DUI," officials said.

Officials have shut down the area while detectives investigate.
