About a thousand people filled the Redding Civic Auditorium to honor Susan “Suzie” Smith, a beloved flight nurse who spent 50 years caring for others before dying in a REACH medical helicopter crash on Highway 50 last month. Family members, colleagues, and community members shared stories of her compassion, service, and deep faith, describing her as the nurse everyone wanted in an emergency. Her colleagues who survived the crash are continuing to recover. The family announced the launch of the Our Angel That Flies Foundation, which will support nursing education and humanitarian missions in Suzie’s name.
