A 20-year-old man has been charged with murder following the fatal stabbing of another young man in Nottingham. The accused, Matthew Smith, appeared in Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Saturday morning, confirming his name, address, and date of birth during the brief hearing. The incident occurred on Monday, November 10, at approximately 12.50pm on Abbotsford Drive in St Ann's. Police were called to the scene after Marley Gascoine, also 20, was discovered with stab wounds. Despite the efforts of paramedics, Mr Gascoine succumbed to his injuries shortly after. A post-mortem examination revealed that he died from a single stab wound to the chest. Smith, who appeared in court dressed in a grey sweatshirt and jogging bottoms, has been remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on Tuesday, November 18. During the hearing, Magistrates Geoffrey Evans, Claire Stokes, and Christine Wright presided, with prosecutor Emma Price and defence counsel Arjun Madahar present. In addition to Smith, another 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder but has since been released on bail. Detective Chief Inspector Ruby Burrow, who is leading the investigation, stated, "Mr Gascoine's family have been informed of this important development. Officers will continue to support the family and the thoughts of the investigative team remain with them. I hope the wider community in St Ann's are comforted by our response which has seen this suspect arrested, charged and placed before the courts." Mr Gascoine's mother expressed her grief, saying, "We would like to thank everyone for their condolences at this excruciating, difficult time. Marley is my first born, and will always hold a special place in my heart. A fantastic son and big brother, grandson and nephew, we will all miss you tremendously. The pain we all feel is indescribable, and, as a mum, there will forever be a piece of my heart missing."
