Portland-born alt-country musician Todd Snider died Friday at 59, his record label said.

“Where do we find the words for the one who always had the right word?” the label, Aimless Inc., said in a statement. “He relayed so much tenderness and sensitivity through his songs, and showed many of us how to look at the world through a different lens.”

The consummate lyricist, Snider counted the likes of John Prine, Kris Kristofferson and Jerry Jeff Walker among his mentors. He helped shape the alt-country music scene in the 2000s, with his 2004 album “East Nashville Sky” earning particular acclaim.

Snider’s music includes multiple tributes to his home state, including the songs “Rose City,” “D.B. Cooper,” and “Tillamook County Jail.”
