UAB’s embattled athletic director is trying to hire a football coach at a horrific time, when some of the nation’s most prestigious institutions are doing the same.

Prestigious and rich institutions. Right now, when it comes to football, the University of Alabama at Birmingham is neither.

Cruel, I know. But real.

I wish, frankly, this wasn’t Ingram’s hire. He’s made some colossal misfires that stretch far beyond an out-of-the-box head football coach hire — Trent Dilfer, Super Bowl-winning QB and high-school head coach
