A former volunteer firefighter convicted of the 2023 hit-and-run death of an 84-year-old cyclist has been sentenced to 11 months behind bars.
Nestor Chemerika was about 250 metres from his Niagara-on-Lake home when he was struck by a pickup truck driven by Richard Moore in 2023.
The 39-year-old Niagara Falls man, who spent a decade as a volunteer with the Niagara-on-the-Lake Fire Department, did not render aid to the critically injured cyclist.
He drove away.
“Stopping to provide assistance is a basic expression of human decency and a reflection of the dignity and value of all human life,” Judge Michael Bordin said in a Superior Court of Justice in St. Catharines on Wednesday.
