Jack Catterall delivered a stunning performance against Ekow Essuman, stopping him in a brutal fight that served as the chief support to Chris Eubank Jr's rematch with Conor Benn on Saturday night at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
Essuman was knocked down in the fourth round but managed to rally back into the fight. However, his fortunes changed dramatically in the penultimate round. After slipping on the canvas, he was knocked down again as he attempted to rise. Catterall seized the opportunity, launching a relentless barrage of punches at his defenceless opponent.
A stretcher was summoned ringside, but Essuman was able to regain his feet shortly after receiving oxygen on the ring apron. He had aimed to build on his earlier victory over Josh Taylor this year, but Catterall's performance has now positioned him closer to a world title shot.
"First and foremost, shout out to his team. Good people, and Essuman is a solid fighter," Catterall remarked after the fight. He added, "We've been working on things, having the confidence to let the hands go. This was the second fight at welterweight. I can still punch but it's having the confidence to keep throwing the hands. I want all of them, [Mario] Barrios, [Lewis] Crocker, [Brian] Norman, [Rolando] Romero, I want them all!"
Earlier in the evening, Adam Azim showcased his talent by stopping Kurt Scoby in the penultimate round, dominating the fight despite Scoby stepping in on short notice. Azim is set to travel to New York in January to watch his rival Dalton Smith compete for a world title against Subriel Matias.
Additionally, Ishmael Davis claimed the British and Commonwealth super-welterweight championship with a narrow points victory over Sam Gilley. Richard Riakporhe continued his impressive heavyweight career, stopping Tommy Welch in just two rounds. The night was filled with thrilling bouts, showcasing the rising stars of boxing.
