A man who was arrested in DC for violating a protective order, then returned the next day and attempted to assault officers, was killed in a shooting, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
Northwest DC resident Kevin Booker, 41, was killed in an officer-involved shooting after returning to the scene of his crime and lunging at investigators with a screwdriver and blade, police said.
Shortly after 6:45 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 14, officers were called to investigate a residential alarm in the 4400 block of Reservoir Road NW. It was later determined that the man who triggered the alarm was the subject of a Civil Protection Order at this residence.
Officers were called to the home, where they spotted Booker inside, officials said. They worked for more than 20 minutes to make contact with him, "repeatedly issuing loud commands ordering him to exit the home," before gaining access through an unlocked door.
Once inside, police said that the officers "continued to issue loud commands for the suspect to make his presence known."
As they were clearing the second floor of the residence, it is alleged that Booker "suddenly lunged at the officers," one of whom fired their weapon and struck him.
Booker was treated by DC Fire and EMS personnel at the scene, where he was later pronounced dead.
Investigators said that another resident at the location applied for and was granted a Civil Protection Order against Booker on Thursday, Oct. 30.
The day before the deadly shooting, Booker had been arrested at the same location for violating the Civil Protection Order.
The officer involved was placed on administrative leave, according to the Metropolitan Police Department. The shooting remains under investigation by the agency's Internal Affairs Force Investigations Team.
It will then be referred to the US Attorney's Office for an independent review.
