MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KTTV) - A family got swept into the water off the California coast, resulting in a 7-year-old girl and her dad both dying and her mom being taken to the hospital.

The Monterey County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Coast Guard responded to a call of a family being swept into the Pacific Ocean near Garrapata State Park a little after 12:45 p.m. on Friday, November 14.

According to the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, 39-year-old Yuji Hu jumped into the water after his 7-year-old daughter got caught in the powerful waves. As the dad tried to save her, both family members got carried farther out to sea, deputies say.
