A lockdown was ordered at the 193rd Special Operations Wing in Middletown after shots were heard near a parking lot close to the aircraft flightline on Saturday, Nov. 15, officials announced.
Shots rang out around 10:45 a.m., prompting the Pennsylvania Air National Guard to activate its “active shooter” response measures, according to the release.
Security Forces personnel, along with Harrisburg International Airport and Middletown police, immediately secured the base and confirmed the area was all clear, officials said. All wing personnel were accounted for.
One wing member suffered a minor injury while responding to the lockdown and was taken by ambulance to a local hospital for treatment, authorities detailed.
Harrisburg International Airport officials believe the suspected shots may have come from local goose hunters near the airport property, as explained in an updated release.
According PAANG's website:
"The 193rd Special Operations Wing is based at the Harrisburg International Airport in Middletown, Pa., and flies the MC-130J Commando II. The MC-130J flies clandestine – or low visibility – single or multi-ship, low-level infiltration, exfiltration and resupply of special operations forces, by airdrop or airland and air refueling missions for special operations helicopters and tiltrotor aircraft, intruding politically sensitive or hostile territories."
