Penn State running backs Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton were viewed as equals entering the 2025 season.

Both fourth-year Nittany Lions were coming off 1,000-yard rushing seasons.

But by the time PSU concluded its non-conference schedule with victories against overmatched Nevada, Florida International and Villanova, one of the runners had emerged as the No. 1 option.

Singleton had carried 41 times for 179 yards and five touchdowns.

Allen had carried 34 times for 273 yards and three touchdowns.

Singleton was averaging 4.4 yards per attempt.

Allen was averaging 8.0 yards per attempt. He also ran for 144 yards against Florida International in Week 2.

Yet the two would continue to split rushing attempts. 44
