Hedgehogs are charming creatures, but can be rather hard to spot, and unless you're in the countryside, it's often quite uncommon to glimpse one in your back garden . Hedgehog numbers are also dropping dramatically because of lost habitats and city expansion, with the Western European hedgehog listed as "Near Threatened", and the British hedgehog appearing on the UK's red list of mammals classified as "Vulnerable". ‌

We can all play a bigger part in supporting hedgehogs by offering them a secure spot in our gardens where they can locate food. Hedgehogs sleep through winter, so come November, they'll be stockpiling food and seeking somewhere protected to hunker down as the bitter winter conditions arrive. ‌
