A passenger was killed early Sunday when a vehicle struck a concrete barrier on an exit ramp from Interstate 78 in Newark, police said.
A 26-year-old Elizabeth man was driving eastbound around 2:15 a.m. when he took the Exit 57 ramp, according to a New Jersey State Police spokesman.
The driver lost control of the vehicle, ran off the roadway to the left and hit the end of a concrete barrier, police said.
Front-seat passenger Anthony D. Thomas, 28, of Plainfield, was killed, according to police.
The driver was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries.
The crash remains under investigation, police said. No additional details were released.
