It rained from about the half-way mark of the parade and straight through 7 p.m., when a quick countdown heralded the switching on of the Festival of Northern Lights, the colourful Christmas displays on either side of the Sydenham River and in Harrison Park.
The umbrellas came out but the spirit of Christmas was found in kids’ excited chatter and freely offered wishes of a merry Christmas, in smiles and the contentment felt when repeatedly handed candy by Santa’s helpers along the route.
