Born in Pittsburgh, Penn., in 1925 to Emmanuel and Bertha Nurenberg, Marshall was raised in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood and attended Taylor Alderdice High School. During World War II, he served as a radar technician in the U.S. Navy. He briefly studied at Carnegie Institute of Technology before transferring to Cleveland College, ultimately earning his law degree from Western Reserve School of Law. Recognized as the top-ranked student, he was inducted into the Society of Benchers in 1953 and the Order of the Coif in 1954.
