Purdue football went to the far corner of Big Ten country Saturday and did the only thing it could not afford to do: implode.

A 49-13 loss at Washington quickly devolved into exactly the kind of catastrophe the Boilermakers had fought so hard to avoid. At this stage — nine straight losses this season, 20 straight against power conference opponents — optics matter for a program which needs to raise its talent level in the offseason.
