A man was shot while authorities say he was trying to rob people at a Jefferson County home.

The wounded suspect was taken into custody hours later in downtown Birmingham.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies responded to a 911 call at 6:30 a.m. Saturday in the 3200 block of Mulga Loop Road.

When they arrived, they learned the 33-year-old suspect had tried to rob the residents at a home there. A shot was fired, and the suspect was hit, said JCSO spokesman Henry Irby.

No other injuries were reported.

The suspect fled the scene and ran into a wooded area. Deputies searched the area but were unable to locate him.

Investigators learned that the wounded suspect had traveled to the downtown Birmingham area.
