ORANGEBURG, S.C. — The first woman to serve as South Carolina State University's president has died at age 84.
The university announced on Sunday evening that Dr. Barbara Hatton had died several days earlier on Nov. 3 in Boston. Hatton served as the university's seventh president between 1992 and 1995.
Current president Alexander Conyers described Hatton as "a true pioneer" and "meaningful contributor" to the university.
“She cared deeply about the power of education to change lives, and her commitment to that mission will be remembered,” Conyers said in Sunday's statement.
During her time at the university, officials stated that she oversaw the transition of the Felton Laboratory School into what it described as a "state-of-the-art professional development school."
