Of all state capitals, Annapolis is by far the closest to our nation’s. Thankfully, the political culture could not be more different. Much of that distinction we owe to our state’s independent political traditions. The rest we owe to a generation of leadership that is rising to meet the moment in these deeply troubling times.

Our names are Pia Morrison and Travis B. Simon, and we are the president and executive director of SEIU Local 500, the most diverse and fastest-growing union in our region. Our more than 20,000 members are child care providers, nonprofit workers, Montgomery County Public School support staff professionals, nonprofit employees, caregivers for adults with disabilities, as well as faculty, staff and graduate student workers at institutes of higher education.
