WASHINGTON — A man died shortly after he was taken into custody by Metro Transit Police (MTPD) at the Anacostia station on Sunday.
According to MTPD, officers arrested the unidentified man for an outstanding warrant for assault.
"While in custody, the individual became unresponsive," MTPD said in a statement posted online.
The man was taken to an area hospital for help, where he died. The cause of his death has not yet been revealed.
"We typically do not comment on pending investigations, but wanted to provide a basic overview of what took place as part of our commitment to transparency," MTPD said.
As is standard protocol, MPD Internal Affairs is investigating the arrest, and the officers involved have been placed on administrative leave.
