According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), a low-pressure area that formed over the southwest Bay of Bengal near the Sri Lankan coast on Sunday morning has intensified and continues to persist over the region. Weather models suggest that the system is likely to move west-northwestwards over the next 24 hours, bringing widespread rainfall to several parts of Tamil Nadu. In response, IMD Chennai has issued an Orange Alert for seven districts, warning of extremely heavy rainfall on Monday.
In the 24 hours ending Monday morning, Thirparappu in Kanyakumari district recorded the highest rainfall at 6 cm, followed by 4 cm in Sembanarkoil in Mayiladuthurai district and 3 cm in Parangipettai in Cuddalore district.
