Johnny Carroll (52) was asleep at his home in Booterstown, Co Dublin, when two payments were made from his Revolut account to travel agencies based in Dubai and Saudi Arabia.

The two transactions were for €1,368 and €1,056. There was a further attempt to take €990 from his account, but luckily this didn’t go through.

Mr Carroll said it was “truly devastating” because he is a small business owner and the incident happened just before Christmas last year.

For unauthorised fraud, banks typically refund victims unless they suspect the account holder failed to take reasonable precautions to protect their banking details.
