A man has sustained non-life-threatening lacerations after a wobbegong shark latched onto his arm while he was spearfishing in Western Australia's South West.

Witnesses say the shark clamped onto the man's forearm and was stabbed multiple times by bystanders before it let go.

The man, believed to be in his 20s, was spearfishing at Canal Rocks in Dunsborough, 250km south of Perth, when the incident occurred.

James Armstrong witnessed the incident while he was on holiday in the South West, fishing for squid nearby.

"We just heard a scream basically and we turned around," Mr Armstrong said.

" And he had a wobbegong attached to his arm. "

Wobbegong sharks, or carpet sharks, are ambush predators that can lock their jaws, clamping down to prevent prey from escaping.
