A 19-year-old has been sentenced to four years in jail after pleading guilty to the 2024 drowning death of a university student.

On January 29, Deepinderjeet Singh, 27, was sitting with a woman near Franklin Wharf on Hobart's waterfront when the then-17-year-old pushed the pair into the water and stole the woman's handbag.

Neither knew how to swim, but while the woman was able to cling to a nearby railing, Mr Singh drowned.

Multiple bystanders tried to rescue Mr Singh, but he was found unresponsive in the water and an autopsy later confirmed he drowned.

Mr Singh, who was in Hobart to study at the University of Tasmania, was on a first date with the woman at the time of the incident, after having met online.
