ST. CLAIRSVILLE — West Virginia trailed Ohio 1-0 after 40 minutes of action Sunday during the annual OVAC Senior Showcase girls’ soccer all-star match.
However, the Mountaineers tied things on a goal by Wheeling Park’s Hailey Hastings in the 69th minute and then outscored the Buckeyes 3-1 in the shootout for a 2-1 victory on the artificial pitch inside windy and chill-filled Red Devil Stadium in St. Clairsville.
“Today was a lot of fun. You see all these girls throughout the season, but when you finally get a chance to coach them, it was exciting,” Wheeling Central head coach Bill Konkle, who guided the Maroon Knights to a W.Va. Class A/AA state championship, said. “The end result worked out perfectly.”
