CHESAPEAKE, Va. — The Chesapeake School Board is set to discuss a proposed policy change on Monday that could impact how teachers and staff address students and colleagues.
According to the meeting agenda, the policy revisions would:
Prohibit compelling staff to address or refer to any employee in a way that violates the staff member’s “constitutionally protected rights.”
Require staff to refrain from using a student’s preferred personal title or pronouns if they do not correspond with the student’s sex assigned at birth.
The agenda does not indicate what prompted the proposed changes.
School board members are also expected to vote on start dates for the next two school years.
