UK households have been told to avoid carrying out a method marketed as cost-cutting during this winter season.

While it may seem cunning to reduce the heating to reduce bills, experts are warning that turning off your heating completely could potentially void your home insurance.

By turning the heating off completely, failing to maintain a minimum indoor temperature or even deciding to skip your boiler servicing could risk invalidating your home insurance.

This could leave households with a hefty bill if something ultimately goes wrong, financial information firm Defaqto said.

Angela Pilley, a home insurance specialist at Defaqto, explained to the Express : "Persistently high winter fuel costs are forcing many people to make tough choices about their household budgets.
