Congress leader Shashi Tharoor on Monday condemned the handing of death sentence to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina by the International Crimes Tribunal-1 (ICT-1) of Bangladesh.
Speaking to ANI, Tharoor said: "Both domestically and abroad, I don’t believe in the death penalty… Trial in absentia, when somebody doesn’t get a chance to defend themselves and explain themselves and then you declare a death penalty, it seems unfair… It’s a very troubling development.”
Earlier today, Bangladesh's ousted prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, was sentenced to death in her absence on Monday at the end of a months-long trial that found her guilty of ordering a deadly crackdown on a student-led uprising last year.
