ATLANTA — Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. reportedly could miss the rest of the season after injuring his knee on Sunday in the loss to Carolina.

The news comes after initial reports that the injury looked like it would not be that serious. On Tuesday, however, the Falcons placed Penix on the injured reserve (meaning a minimum of at least four missed games) and said, "We are working through the medical process to determine the severity of the injury."

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Penix's injury is "potentially season-ending" but that the quarterback "will be seeking a second opinion." The situation is "not encouraging," the ESPN reporter posted on X.

Penix was injured when he was hit in the third quarter and taken to ground.
