PHILADELPHIA — The Detroit Lions’ prolific offense ran into a wall Sunday night, and it wasn’t just the Eagles’ defense.
Self-inflicted wounds, including poor third-down execution, a costly celebration penalty and red-zone failures, doomed the Lions in a 16-9 loss at Lincoln Financial Field, raising questions about whether the NFL’s second-highest scoring offense can overcome its own mistakes against elite competition.
The Lions outgained the Eagles 317-272 in total yards despite possessing the ball for 11 fewer minutes. Still, the Lions were unable to sustain drives, especially on third down, where they converted only three of their 13 opportunities (23.1%) and none of their five fourth-down attempts.
