A young man from Jemez Springs died after what a witness described as an accidental shooting early Saturday morning in the parking lot of a casino near Española.

Another young man — who was the victim's best friend, a witness told investigators — faces a charge of second-degree murder in the death of 21-year-old Elias Tiberi.

Investigators allege Tiberi's friend Gerald Trujillo, 21, of Española, shot Tiberi while the two were sitting in Trujillo's car in the parking lot of the Ohkay Hotel Casino at Ohkay Owingeh pueblo, just north of Española.

The two had been drinking at the Double-O Bar & Nightclub inside the casino for much of the evening Friday before they went out to Trujillo's car just after midnight to take cocaine, a witness alleged to New Mexico State Police, according to an ar
