After making transportation a key plank in his campaign platform, Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani will have the chance to make up for Eric Adams’ missed opportunities to reshape New York’s streets when he takes over at City Hall.
Street design, parking enforcement, bike and bus lanes are among the areas where experts, advocates and former Department of Transportation (DOT) officials said Mamdani has an opening to make big moves as mayor — even though Gov. Kathy Hochul has already pumped the brakes on his fare-free buses proposal .
Sam Schwartz, who served as the city’s traffic commissioner under Mayor Ed Koch in the mid-1980s, said Mamdani can push through significant changes “almost instantly” with moves aimed at helping pedestrians, cyclists and motorists move around the streets more safe
