The use of artificial intelligence holds tremendous promise in medicine and other fields, but a healthy dose of skepticism is warranted about the multitude of claims about its miraculous benefits for humankind. Every now and then, though, an application emerges — such as using AI to sort household trash, conserve landfill space and save taxpayer dollars — that seems capable of meeting the hype.
The regional authority overseeing waste disposal for South Hampton Roads cities and surrounding counties is finalizing a 20-year contract with AMP Robotics, a Colorado firm pioneering the use of AI to separate material from mixed waste streams to be repurposed for other uses.
The deal with the Southern Public Service Authority will cost participating localities a minimum of $22.5 million a year
