Penn State interim head coach Terry Smith knew what he had in true freshman corner Daryus Dixson prior to the start of the season

Smith, who was the Nittany Lions’ cornerbacks coach back then, was one of many people in the PSU program raving about the 6-0, 195-pound defensive back from Mater Dei in California.

Dixson is growing up fast for 4-6 Penn State, which hosts 7-3 Nebraska on Saturday.

He made his first career start in the Lions’ 28-10 win at Michigan State on Saturday.

Dixson finished with five tackles, half a tackle for loss, a pass breakup and a fumble recovery.

“Daryus is playing extremely well,” Smith said Monday.

“He played the most snaps of any corner on the team, which is a tribute to him really coming into his own.
