AUSTIN, Texas — A Travis County judge declared a mistrial on Monday in the case against an Austin police officer charged with deadly conduct .
Officer Daniel Sanchez was charged in connection with the on-duty shooting death of Rajan Moonesinghe in 2022.
Since Friday, jurors have been deliberating if his actions were justified. But earlier Monday, they told the judge they were deadlocked.
Just before 1:30 p.m. on Monday, Judge Karen Sage read them an Allen charge, which is simply a nudge to get the jurors to come to a verdict. Sage said if they can’t come to a decision, she will have to grant a mistrial.
The judge brought each juror back into the courtroom and asked if they thought they could reach a verdict if they keep deliberating, and each one said "no."
